Story board

For the final phase of my time capsule project, I will focus on creating a narrative where my dad becomes the protagonist. He discovers the time capsule (my landscape model), opens it, and is inspired to revisit the natural surroundings of his childhood in northeastern Thailand. The story will center on his journey through memories of the seasonal flooded forest, the river, and the connection to nature that shaped his upbringing.

In my storyboard, the protagonist, inspired by my dad, is seen walking through an urban setting when something catches his attention on his phone. He later sits down, deep in thought, pondering a memory. The story transitions to the protagonist discovering a time capsule featuring a landscape model. This discovery prompts a nostalgic journey, represented by his trip back to the natural landscapes of his childhood, recalling the harmony of the terrain, nature, and his experiences growing up near the seasonal forests. Finally, my dad is immersed in the peaceful and beautiful natural surroundings, evoking a sense of return and reconnection to his roots.

Tools

I used Photoshop to create the scenes by collaging the images, characters, and elements together. I specifically zoomed in and out on the character to express their emotions, personality, and thoughts, based on the empathy map. Creating this storytelling is fascinating to me, it feels like I’m bringing the character into the real world. Watching how their feelings and actions come alive through the story adds a deeper connection between the character and their environment

Stop motion Studio

I used Stop Motion Studio to create the stop-motion animation by arranging all the scenes together. After that, I imported the project into After Effects, where I combined the sound and enhanced the video by adding additional image scenes toward the end. This process allowed me to fine-tune the animation's flow and ensure that the visual and audio elements came together cohesively to create an engaging narrative.

Reflection

I believe that storytelling is all about how we convey ideas and communicate with the audience. The main character plays an important role in this process, so understanding what they think, feel, say, and do is important for helping the audience grasp the story's context. Applying an empathy map is particularly useful in this regard. It helps to step into the character's shoes, to empathize with their thoughts and emotions, and to better understand why they act and feel the way they do.
