Harmony of Hope: Composing a P5.js Rhythmic Tribute to My Parents' Journey from Thai Student Activism to Survival
The Day of Great Tragedy, October 14, 1973
This historical movement wasn't just a chapter in history books for me; it was a reality lived by my parents. They were among those brave student activists. Facing gunfire and bombings, they survived and fled to China, where they lived for seven years. Their courage and their journey have always been a source of inspiration for me.
The Day of Great Tragedy, October 14, 1973 in Bangkok, Thailand
Thanom succeeded Sarit Thanarat as prime minister in Thailand, continuing Sarit’s authoritarian policies. However, his rule faced challenges due to rapid urbanization and social issues, leading him to promulgate a new constitution in 1968 that ensured a powerful prime minister but a weak legislature. Thanom's regime was characterized by the suppression of democratic elements and the promotion of a military-style government.
Growing dissatisfaction with Thanom's rule, particularly among university students, led to widespread protests. The situation escalated on October 14, 1973, when government forces clashed violently with protestors in Bangkok, resulting in numerous casualties. This event is remembered as "wan maha wipayok" or "the day of great sorrow" in Thailand.
