Laser Cutting

What I learn

When creating vector files in Adobe Illustrator for laser cutting, one important consideration is accounting for the kerf. "Kerf" refers to the amount of material that is removed during the cutting process due to the thickness of the cutting tool, in this case, the laser beam.

Concept

The concept involves creating a wooden frame that offers a layered, three-dimensional view of iconic cityscapes, specifically focusing on the Dumbo view and Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.

I created outlines in AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator

Used Epilog Laser

Preparing for Laser Cutting:

  • Choose a 12x24 inch birch wood panel as the material base.

  • Position the wood correctly in the laser cutter to avoid misalignment.

  • In case of errors, realign and repeat the process to ensure accuracy.

Executing Laser Cutting:

  • Perform the laser cutting process, focusing on precision and depth.

  • For thicker birch wood (1/8 inches), multiple passes (usually two) might be required for a thorough cut.

Finished!

Conclusion

The Scenic Frame is more than a mere artistic piece; it's an interactive tool that encourages users to engage with and reinterpret their urban surroundings. Also, it's a lens that changes how we perceive our surroundings.
